Outer Space - SEVEN

““Welcome to my OUTER SPACE Blog where I share ideas and personal experiences even some art and writing samples.”

The 5 words I chose to describe my space are names of colors because they hold a place of prominence in my life as an artist.

The space and objects, pieces of art in my room are filled with these -- My favorites are:

1. BLUE – This is my favorite color right now. To and for me it is the most soothing color there is. And there are so many variations one to suit whatever mood you are in. And I have a confession my room is filled with blue furnishings. My curtains are a blue stripe of ombring color. My bedside lamps are blue even the shades and finding them was like finding a needle in a haystack especially the right shade with a hint of magenta. My X-Chair is also Light blue as is my bed spread made of a navy-blue stripe. The rest of my possessions are just accents of blue. I like to say this is my BLUE period. A few years ago, I was much more into purple.

2. PURPLE – This is my next favorite color. Last month I fell in love with getting this pinkish purple I guess it was mauve bike to replace my white one. But I couldn’t keep it because it wasn’t electric, and I wanted an electric purple bike. This may sound very strange to you but to me colors can make the difference between a good day and a bad day. A great mood or a foul mood. I think people in general underestimate the way colors can make you feel. But purple makes me feel playful, happy. They say it is the color of royalty and I can believe that.

3. MAUVE – many of my art pieces for some reason include the color mauve which isn’t quite purple or pink – it’s mauve a very soft color. Muted in it’s resonance. Usually I combine this color a lot with teal in my pastel work – they work very well together with all due respect to the psychology of colors and the color wheel. Both these in combination are very striking together – I’ve notice in a lot of VR and Video games when they want to create a striking graphic, they combine these two colors teal and mauve.

4. TEAL – ditto but in addition to how it works with mauve – teal is a beautiful color in it’s own right. But it has to be just right not too green – it needs a modicum of blue in it to cool it down that’s what makes it ideal. But colors to me act like recipes in a cookbook. With a little of this and a little of that you can change the atmosphere of any scene any object – again any mood. I think colors are that powerful. In fact, I’m sure that at one point or another wars have been fought over this color or that – the use of them – the symbolic nature they seem to take on.

5. GREEN – To me this a very grounding color as it’s the color if you will of live things usually plants. Trees, grass. But for some reason I don’t particularly like Kelly green. It’s too primary for me which brings me to another point about colors – I am not partial to primary colors – I like my colors to have range and depth which is something that you get out of secondary and tertiary colors and tints and shades. To me primary colors are kind of boring.

In just that order of importance is the prominence they hold for me.

One more thing the world would be a better place if when in an ad the advertisements photographed would be true to the colors, they advertise many times I get an object home that I bought and the picture they posted is nothing like what they advertised. Many people think all blues, reds, pinks, and greens, whites, yellows are alike – nothing could be further from the truth. Maybe you have to be an artist or designer of some kind to understand that, but I think the world be a better place if we all understood a little more about color and how it affects us all.
